Surface Area Calculator

Convert all measurements from feet and inches into their decimal equivalent in feet only.
Example: You have a measurement of 6’9” (9”/12”) + 6” = 6.75’

Formulas

  • Square Footage (squares & rectangles):   (length x width) = Square Footage
  • Square Footage (circles): (radius x radius) 3.14159 = Square Footage
  • Square Footage (Right Triangles): (1/2 x width) length = Square Footage
  • Cubic Footage: (square footage x depth) = Cubic Footage
  • Cubic Yardage: (cubic footage / 27) = Cubic Yardage
  • Circumference of a Circle: (diameter) 3.14159 = Circumference

Gravel, Sand and Soils

  • Figure out the square footage to be covered
  • Multiply the square footage by depth desired to get the cubic footage
  • Divide the cubic footage by 27 to get the cubic yards needed

Example: A rectangular landscape bed is 12’ 8” long and averages 5’6” wide and the depth desired is 2 1/2” deep.

(12.66’ x 5.5’) = 69.3 square feet

(69.3 x .208) = 14.414 cubic feet

(14.414/27) = .534 cubic yards (stop here for soil needed)

(.534 X 1.25) = .667 tons (here for gravel or sand)

Flatwork (Patios, walls, etc.)

  • Figure out the square footage to be covered
  • Get the coverage per ton of the product desired
  • Dived the square footage needed by the coverage per ton

Example: A patio or wall is 20’ long and 8’ wide or high and you would like to use Buff Patio flagstone that has coverage of 110-130 square feet per ton.

(20’ x 8’) = 160 square feet

Average coverage is 120 square feet per ton

(160/120) = 1.333 tons needed

Stacked Stone walls & Waterfalls

  • Determine the average length, the average height and the average width of the stone in feet
  • Multiply the length by the width by the height to get cubic footage
  • There is about 15 cubic feet in a ton of building stone or flagstone so divide the cubic footage by 15 to determine the quantity of stone needed in tons

Example: A 20’ long stacked stone wall that is 1’ thick and 2’ tall

Length = 20’, Height = 2’, Width = 1”

(20’ x 2’ x 1’) = 40 cubic feet

(40/15) = 2.667 tons of stone needed
